A Wartime Mine Crew, 1918, Posed Photo in Virginia City;
Women stepped in for men called to war. Back row, first on the left, is a woman miner, also second from the right, is a woman.
In the darkness of the mines, the only way you could tell the women from the men was they tucked their trousers into their boot socks.
The three girls seated are very young. Before the rise of labor unions, children worked full shifts as muckers, cleaning out the raw ore dug by the adults.
